SHAME ON THEM

On July 8, 2006 Army Corporal Joseph P Micks, age 22 of Rapid River, a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, who was proudly serving in Iraq, gave his life for this country while protecting everyone who calls themselves an American.

His life was just beginning. I did not know this young man, only saw the obituary in the local paper and heard about it on my local radio station. I felt pride for this young soldier, pride for his family but also the deepest sorrow for their loss. This young man's family had not seen him in over a year and his tour of duty in Iraq was about to end in a few short days. Instead, his life ended.

On July 18th, flags were flown at half mast in honor of this young brave soldier.

While at work on the 19th I heard my local radio station announce a memorial service for Corporal Micks but also that the local police had been alerted and would be on standby at this solemn and private last goodbye for the boy his family may have known as Joey and the man, Joseph.

When the radio announcer proceeded to say that a group of "protesters" were planning on attending the memorial service, not to honor a soldier, but rather to protest a war, I was mortified at the audacity of such a group of people. How can anyone show such disrespect, not only for the dead but more importantly, the living? Shame on them! Is there nothing better in life for them to do then "crash" a funeral? Shame shame!

If you want to "protest" a war, go to the war-torn country you so boldly defend and walk where those soldiers have walked, for you! Crawl where those soldiers have crawled, for you! Walk down those streets and carry your damn signs and yell your defiant words and see how safe you'll be without a soldier protecting you against the ones who are trying to kill you!

No one loves war, but if we must be at war, certainly not by any soldiers choice, the least you can do is THANK a soldier for saving your all-american ass!

I proudly pledge allegiance to MY flag, Thank GOD for my day, and am proud and honored when a soldier lays down his/her LIFE for me and my FREEDOM!

I did not know Army Corporal Joseph P Micks but I wish I could thank him now for what he gave up for me. I wish I could thank his parents for raising a fine young man. I pray that as a mother of 4 sons, I never have to know the feeling these parents must feel.

With deepest respect and sympathy for the soldier that just gave his life for me, thank you Joseph.
